Most people would not believe that a psychiatric hospital could be a popular destination for outings, but that is actually the case in Roskilde. Denmark’s oldest psychiatric hospital, St. Hans, is set in a scenic area that is one of the favourites for local citizens’ days out.
One of them and one you should not miss is a visit to the garden of St. Hans, that used to keep the hospital self-sufficient with vegetables and herbs. Later, the garden was shut down but it was recently reopened and is now tended by volunteers assisted by the hospital’s patients. Within a short time, this green oasis with market garden, summerhouse and a large berry garden has become an attractive free space offering activity to people who want to feel the growing grass and to watch the trees bursting into leaf. Visit also the garden’s organic café to enjoy freshly made coffee, cakes and other delicacies.
