It was granted as a town in 1262 by the Margrave Johann of Brandenburg.

The city received a fortification ring that was a long time considered the safest of the Mark Brandenburg.
For several centuries, the medieval town structure was preserved. The old town, presented carefully renovated today developed after the devastating fire of the year 1711.
Many of the medieval buildings had fallen to the flames . Most arable villas, and the simplified city layout originate from the period of reconstruction.

At the beginning of the 19th century , the city grew by the buidling-boom of the Gründerzeit over the size of its former medieval city limits .

Today the city is a popular attraction for history lovers and peace-seeking tourists.
