Rheinsberg

Rheinberg is situated in the chain of lakes of the same name, a southern branch of the Mecklenburg Lake District.

In the 18th century Rheinberg was a residence. In 1734 Friedrich Wilhelm I. gave the palace complex in Rheinberg as a present to his son Frederick , the later Prussian King Frederick II.
It took two years of renovation, designed by Knobelsdorffstraße , a friend of the Crown Prince.
Newly Married the prince in 1736 along with his wife Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick- Bevern moved into the new domicile.
Here he lived until his accession to the throne in 1740 far away from his father, to whom he had no good relationship.
About his time in Rheinsberg the " Old Fritz" has said later, that it was the most wonderful of his life.

But not only royals enjoyed the scenic beauty and tranquility of nature in and around Rheinberg- to a larger audience this part of Brandenburg became known by Fontane's " Walks through the Mark Brandenburg" and Tucholsky love story of Claire and Wölfchen.

In recent years, Rheinberg has developed into a center of world-class concerts, operas and theater performances.
