| Stage 1, Copenhagen - Køge approx. 70 km.
The busy town hall square (S) in Copenhagen is a suitable starting point for your trip. See all you wish to see of this captivating and fascinating city, and then sit down at one of the many pavement cafés and plan the first stage of your cycling trip before you jump in the saddle. Leave the city by cycling down Amager Boulevard and on to Hotel Scandinavia. From here, proceed along Artillerivej and the national cycle route across Amager Fælled until you pass Vejlands Allé. Carry on along the route on Amager and out across the embankment to Avedøre Holme on Zealand and continue via Brøndby and Vallensbæk Strand. It´s not far now to Ishøj [1] and a welcome rest in the unique Strandpark recreational area. The park is one of the largest land reclamation projects in Northern Europe. The original coastline was advanced, creating a unique recreational area which covers a seven-kilometre stretch of the coast. The area features a number of white sandy beaches, attractive harbours and quiet lagoons, as well as a superb network of cycle paths and footpaths. In the midst of this coastal landscape in Ishøj, you´ll find the museum of modern art known as "Arken", an impressive architectural monument. North of the cycle path lies the old village of Tranegilde [A]. You may like to take a detour and visit the village to see the small animal park with different breeds of goats, moufflons and Scottish longhorn cattle. Once you have had a rest and taken a look around, return to the route and continue along the white beach at Hundige Strand [2]. Weary travellers will find that the quality of the bathing water here is unsurpassed, so make sure you take a refreshing dip before heading inland! You should also take a quick look at the marina in Hundige. Next, proceed to Kildebrønde [3] where you´ll find a beautiful medieval church. Greve [4], the next town on the route, is very proud of its new fishing harbour and marina. The town is also home to one of the largest swimming pools in Scandinavia, and to the arts centre known as "Portalen". Greve´s Museum of cultural history features exhibits on the ancient moor-dwelling culture. When you get to Karlslunde [5], take a look at the beautiful medieval church. If you want to see another equally beautiful church, then take a detour inland to Tune [D]. Next, cycle via Karlstrup [6] to Solrød [7]. Anyone interested in geology will be thrilled to see the former gravel pit which is now a nature reserve and a veritable geological treasure trove. Carry on through Lille Skensved [8] and Ølby [9], and you´ll return once again to the coast and the harbour town of Køge (D). Here, you´ll find one of the most beautiful medieval squares in the country as well as Denmark´s oldest functioning town hall. The museum is dedicated to the history of the local area, while the gallery features art from the 1900s. Outside the town the white beaches invite you to swim, relax, build sand castles or collect pebbles, before visiting one of the many bars and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the sound of the waves lapping the beach.
