Stage 4, Stege/Møn - Nykøbing F. 60 km.

Once you have enjoyed the full glory of the nature paradise of Møn, it's time to continue the tour. Cycle via Lendemarke [1] and Lille Bissinge [2] past meadows and lakes, through picturesque villages with small churches. Enjoy a rest in the peaceful town of Store Damme [3] with its two beautiful museums, or take a detour northwards to "Klekkende Høj" [B]. The more than 5000-year-old double passage grave may well inspire thoughts of God and the hereafter. You´ll find yet another burial place a little further north, namely the 4000-year-old burial mound known as "Kong Asgers Høj" [A]. If you want to see yet another burial site, carry on south to Hårbølle where you´ll come across "Grønsalen" [C], a stone ship from the Stone Age. The stone ship, which is 100 metres long, features a barrow circle made up of 145 huge stones, and is Denmark´s largest burial site. If you turn left half-way to Bogø, you´ll reach a hill after about one kilometre. From the top you´ll be able to see a small cove. Above the so-called Fanefjord [D] stands a 13th century church known all around the world for its unique frescoes. Cross a dike to Bogø By [4] and take the ferry to Stubbekøbing [5] (please note that the ferry only operates during the summer - ask at the tourist information office!). A hill in the beautiful small town of Stubbekøbing near Grønsund offers a stunning view of the island of Bogø. Continue along the coast to Grønsund [6], past gentle meadows that gradually give way to a beautiful wood once you´ve passed Næsgård [7]. When you reach the friendly fishing hamlet of Hesnæs [8], take a rest and taste some fresh fish before you take a look at the unique local houses with their thatched roofs and walls. Well-kept thatched farmhouses can be seen on both sides of the road. A detour to Halskov Vænge will take you through a bleak primeval forest with no less than 6 mysterious passage graves and 72 burial mounds [F]. Once you´ve taken a look at these silent witnesses from the past, continue along the coast to Tromnæs and take en detour to Korselitse [G]. After the gloom of the forest, you´ll no doubt enjoy the beautiful Korselitse manor house with its idyllic park and small lake. Proceed via Ulslev [9] and Idestrup [10] until you reach Nykøbing (D), the largest town on Falster. Here, cyclists can look forward to the old town centre, a family-owned zoo, a number of tempting restaurants, a museum and a very distinctive water tower. You´ll find a number of other attractions waiting outside Nykøbing. Just three kilometres away Danish history, and the legend of Queen Margrethe I, is being revived. At Middelaldercentret, a medieval centre, you can watch as the old handicrafts are brought to life while traders, innkeepers and street performers wander around. Knights get their esquires to wield the weighty war machines just to show the public how large stones were tossed through the air. A fantastic experience for young and old alike which is not to be missed.
