| Stage 8, Güstrow - Krakow am See approx. 30 km.
You´re about to leave Güstrow (S). If you want to start the day slowly, then pay a visit to the nature and environmental park where you can walk through an underwater tunnel below the river bed and marvel at the amount of life in the river. Cycle towards Mühl Rosin [1], enjoying the wonderful views of lake Inselsee that greet both hikers and cyclists. You´ll pass through a woodland before you reach the village of Bellin [2]. The town, which is located in a valley amidst rolling hills, has a late Roman church which is well worth a visit. The fieldstone church still has a number of remarkable paintings dating back to the 14th and 15th century on both its walls and its ceiling. As in so many other places in Mecklenburg, large numbers of burial mounds and dolmens bear witness to the fact that the area has been inhabited for a long, long time. Belliner Steintanz is one of the best known of these formations, and it remains an unsolved mystery to this day. This short detour into the past can easily be combined with a picnic. Take a break, gather strength, and then proceed to Groß Breesen [3] which is proud of its nickname "The Book Village". Once you´ve had a look at the village and perhaps at the collection of books in the manor hotel, continue through fields and woodland to Alt Sammit [4], where you should visit the simple, quadrangular fieldstone church from the 13th century and then rest a little before setting off for Krakow am See.
Krakow am See (D) will soon appear on the horizon. The spa town, with its excellent air, presents visitors with many splendid sights including a regional museum, a distinctive square with a church and a town hall, and a seaside promenade. Changing exhibitions and concerts, pleasant boat trips on the lake, great fishing and a small pedestrian street will ensure that no one gets bored. The lookout tower at Jörnberg affords an impressive view of the entire area with its many lakes and woods. The old thatched baths just below the tower tempt visitors to a refreshing swim. Thanks to the excellent air quality, the baths were awarded the EU´s environmental Blue Flag last year. The town´s former synagogue, which now features changing exhibitions and concerts, is also worthy of note. The museum of printing with its demonstration workshop in the "old school" will appeal to all book-lovers. If you´d prefer a little quiet and some beautiful scenery, try a detour to the Krakower Obersee nature reserve. Two viewpoints in the reserve offer a unique panorama. The huge beech tree further along the route is unsurpassed - with a trunk that measures almost 8 metres in circumference and 24 meters in height, this is by far the largest beech in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. How many people would it take to reach around the tree? If you cycle northwards around Lake Krakower, you´ll enjoy a fantastic view of the lake with its islands and islets. With a bit of luck, you may even be able to see eagles hunting.
