Stage 14, Zehdenick - Oranienburg approx. 34 km.
Set off well-rested from Zehdenick (S) and head for Krewelin [1]. If you´re feeling a little parched, you´ll soon get a chance to enjoy a drink in Franziskushof [A] where you can take a short break. You may want to visit the church in Krewelin before heading for Bischofswerder [2]. If this seems too far, take a detour to see the wild horses in Liebenthal [B]. The nearby farm is home to other endangered species of domestic animals.
Hit the road again with renewed energy, and cycle along the Voss Canal past the distinctive lock in Bischofswerder [2]. The regional museum in Liebenwalde [3], which is known as "The museum in the Slammer", is located in the old town jail. Visitors can learn about the history of the building and the area in the six historical cells and rooms. Some eight kilometres west of the road lies Ponyhof Neuholland [C], a horse riding heaven, particularly for children. You can also take a detour to Liebenberg castle [D].
You´ll pass through a Brandenburg wood rich in animal life as you cycle along the Oder-Havel Canal via Kreuzbruch [4] to Bernöwe [5]. Woodland paths with changing views of the stunning scenery will take you to the ferry that will sail you safely across to Malz [E]. At the Malz wild rose garden, visitors will find aromatic herbs, inquisitive sheep and goats and delightful guinea pigs and rabbits waiting for them.
Once you´ve passed Friedrichsthal [6] you won´t be far from today´s destination, Oranienburg (D). Nearby is Lake Grabowsee, idyllically located in the middle of the wood. Go for a relaxing swim so that you feel refreshed before heading into Oranienburg. The town, which is the capital of the administrative district, has a baroque castle built under the Electoral Prince Friedrich Wilhelm I - the great Electoral Prince. This, and the county museum, are both worth a visit. Just a few minutes away from the town centre lies the memorial and the Sachsenhausen Museum dedicated to the memory of the concentration camp and the darkest chapter in Germany´s history. Until the cycle path is completed at the end of 2001, you should travel from Zehdenick via Kleinmutz, Bergsdorf (home to the painter Kurt Mühlenhaupt´s museum), Liebenberg and Freienhagen to Malz. The rolling countryside offers countless beautiful views. The roads are excellent and there is very little traffic.
