Stage 15, Oranienburg - Berlin/Hennigsdorf approx. 20 km.

Leap elegantly into the saddle when you´re ready to leave Oranienburg (S). The first stop is Lehnitz [1] where you can visit the house of Friedrich Wolf and find out everything about the author. After this brief literary interlude, the route will take you to Borgsdorf [2], past the Briese valley. The Briese river, which gave the valley its name, winds its way through the famous holiday region until it reaches the River Havel. In Borgsdorf you can enjoy a rest at one of the beautiful inns. In Birkenwerder [4] you should visit Clara Zetkin´s house which boasts original editions of some of the author´s best-known works. On the road to Hohen Neuendorf you´ll pass the tranquil Havel meadows and the Stolper Heide nature reserve. This paradise for birds appeals by way of its primitive character and sense of solitude. Cycle through shady woodland to Hohen Neuendorf [5]. If you feel like a detour, then visit Marwitz [B] just five kilometres away. This is where the 90-year-old Hedwig Bollhagen makes the now legendary HB-Keramik ceramics in his workshop. You may also like to see the oven and ceramics museum in Velten [A] with its beautiful old ovens and tiles in different styles.

The town of Hennigsdorf [6] is both friendly and welcoming and has a beautiful pedestrian street.

In some places, this stage of the route is very sandy and uneven, particularly in the open countryside. Between Hennigsdorf and Hohen Neuendorf the route runs along the main road for a distance of about one kilometre.

The entire stretch of the route is due to be completed during the second half of 2001 at the very latest. If you´ve had a look round Hennigsdorf and still have any energy left, then stop in Nieder Neuendorf [C] on the way to Berlin to look at the only remaining guard tower from the old Berlin Wall. An exhibition here tells the story of the division of Berlin. There are S-trains from here to Berlin (D) - go to Bahnhof Friedrichstraße station where you´ll find the old and new centre of Germany´s old and new capital. Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag, Kurfürstendamm and the new Potsdamer Platz are just a few minutes away by bike. Enjoy the exciting city of Berlin and the thousands of sights and attractions on offer - this colourful and vibrant European metropolis is undoubtedly the high point of the trip!
